What an anagram solver does

An anagram solver turns a set of letters into real words. Take the letters in “listen.” They also spell silent, enlist, and tinsel. Those six letters can line up in 720 different orders. Only seven of those orders are words in my list, and the solver finds them in a blink.

The tool runs in two modes. Exact anagrams use every letter you type. All words adds the shorter ones too, which suits a Scrabble rack better.

How to use the solver

It takes four steps.

  1. Type your letters. Use a to z and the question mark.
  2. Pick exact anagrams or all words.
  3. Press Solve. The longest words show up first.
  4. Sort by Scrabble score or A to Z, or copy the list.

Your letters also appear in the address bar. That lets you bookmark a result or send it to a friend. The page /anagram-solver/?q=listen is one example.

Blank tiles and wildcards

A question mark stands for one unknown letter, just like a blank tile. Type stare? and the solver tries all 26 letters in that slot. You can add up to three wildcards. Each one widens the results fast, so a search for ret?ins in All words mode returns 1,947 words. A letter that a wildcard supplies scores zero points, as it does on a real board.

Filters for games, crosswords, and puzzles

The filters sit under More filters. Here is what each one does.

FilterUse it to
Min and max lengthFit a word into a tight gap on the board or grid
Starts withMatch a known first letter or extend a word already played
Ends withFind plurals and endings such as -ing or -ed
ContainsPlay through a letter already on the board
Exclude lettersSkip words that use a letter you want to keep

Crossword solvers can combine them. Enter the letters you know, add a question mark for each gap, and set the exact length. Then match the pattern with Starts with or Ends with.

Why game dictionaries disagree

The word list behind this tool follows Collins Scrabble Words. It holds 267,751 words that run from 2 to 15 letters. Clubs outside North America use Collins. North American Scrabble uses a different official list, and Words With Friends and Wordfeud keep lists of their own.

My list comes from an older Collins edition, so some newer words are missing. A game that uses another list may also reject a few words shown here. Check any unusual word in your game before you play it.

Tips for better plays

These tips are my advice, not rules.

  • Hunt for seven-letter words first. Scrabble pays a 50-point bonus when you play all seven tiles.
  • Keep a mix of vowels and consonants on your rack.
  • Learn the short words. They let you score in tight spots.
  • Save the S and the blank for a bigger play.
  • Replay old racks after a game to see what you missed.

Cryptic crosswords hide anagrams behind clue words such as mixed, broken, wild, or confused. When you spot one, type the letters of the marked word, set the answer length, and test each result against the crossing letters.

How the solver works

The solver counts letters. Your rack of “listen” holds one e, one i, one l, one n, one s, and one t. For every word in the list, the tool asks whether those counts can build it. A blank can fill one missing letter. The whole scan runs in your browser, so nothing leaves your device.

Most bad results come from three slips. You mistype a letter, you stack too many filters, or you pick exact anagrams when you wanted shorter words. Clear a filter or switch modes before you assume the tool is wrong.

Anagram solver FAQ

How many letters can I enter?

You can enter up to 20 characters. Up to three of them can be question marks. The results can run up to 15 letters, because that is the longest word in the list.

What is the difference between an anagram solver and a word finder?

A solver rearranges one set of letters. A word finder usually adds board tools, such as playing through letters already on the grid. The Contains, Starts with, and Ends with filters give you a simple version of that.

Can I use the solver during a game?

That depends on the rules. Ranked games and tournaments ban it. In a casual game with friends, agree on it first.

Why does another solver show different words?

Each site picks its own word list and edition. Small gaps are normal. If a word matters, check it in the dictionary your game uses.

Does the solver work offline?

Not at first. The page needs a connection, and the word list is a download of about 2.6 MB. Your browser then keeps that file for up to 30 days, so later visits load faster.

How do I report a missing word or a bug?

Use the contact page and tell me the letters you typed. I check each report against the word list and reply within 3 business days.
